Västäräkki ja koskikara koskenlaskussa

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A wagtail and a dipper make a bet about which bird can ride a log down the rapids better. Everyone knows that the dipper is more skilled, and it speaks proudly about itself. While it is sure of victory, the wagtail quietly waits on the stones beside the river.

When the race begins, the dipper takes the front of the log and the wagtail stands at the back. During the journey, the dipper jumps and moves its wings. The wagtail says nothing until they reach the strongest part of the current. Then it raises its body, beats its wings, and calls out that now they are moving.

The dipper laughs and turns to see how the other bird is doing. The wagtail stays firmly on the log. But the dipper falls into the water while turning around and has to struggle for a long time before getting out.
