Karhu ja hiiri

Short story

Osmo-karhu oli kiinni verkossa. Hän yritti päästä pois, mutta ei onnistunut. Lopulta hän väsyi ja nukahti.

Pienet hiiret tulivat leikkimään hänen päälleen. Karhu heräsi ja otti yhden hiiren kiinni suuren käpälänsä alle. Muut juoksivat pois.

«Päästä minut menemään!» hiiri pyysi. «Minäkin autan sinua vielä joskus!»

Karhu nauroi.

«Sinäkö autat minua? Olet niin pieni! Mutta saat mennä. Olet liian pieni syötäväksi.»

Karhu nosti käpälänsä, ja hiiri juoksi pois. Karhu oli yhä kiinni verkossa. Häntä nauratti edelleen hiiren lupaus.

Pian hiiri palasi. Nyt mukana oli suuri joukko muita hiiriä. Kaikki alkoivat purra verkon köysiä poikki. Pian karhu oli vapaa.

«Huomaatko? Pienikin voi auttaa», hiiri sanoi.

Karhua hävetti. Hän oli nauranut hiirille, koska ne olivat pieniä. Nyt hän sanoi vain «Kiitos!» ja lähti metsään.

English summary · includes the ending

Osmo the bear is caught in a net. After struggling until he is exhausted, he falls asleep. A group of mice begins playing on his body. Their feet tickle him awake, and he catches one mouse beneath his paw while the others escape.

The frightened mouse begs for its life and promises to repay him one day. Osmo laughs at the idea that such a small, weak creature could ever do anything for a large bear. Nevertheless, he releases it because it is too small to eat and not worth killing.

The bear is still laughing when the mouse returns with many companions. Together, they bite through the ropes and free him. The little mouse points out that even weak creatures can repay a kindness.

Ashamed of having laughed at the mice because of their size, Osmo leaves for the forest. All he can manage to say is thank you.
