Hölmöläisten talo
Hölmölän kylän ihmiset rakensivat talon. He tekivät paljon työtä, mutta unohtivat ikkunat. Kun talo oli valmis, sisällä oli hyvin pimeää.
Ihmiset miettivät pitkään, miten he voisivat saada valoa taloon. Sitten he saivat idean: he toisivat auringonvaloa sisään säkissä!
He avasivat säkin ulkona auringossa. Sitten he sulkivat sen hyvin ja kantoivat sen taloon. Sisällä he avasivat säkin. Mutta talossa oli aivan yhtä pimeää kuin ennen. Ihmiset olivat hyvin ihmeissään.
Silloin paikalle tuli Matti. Hän kuuli, mikä kylän ihmisten ongelma oli.
»Antakaa minulle sata markkaa», Matti sanoi. »Minä tuon teille valoa!»
Kylän ihmiset olivat iloisia. Sata markkaa ei heidän mielestään ollut paljon. He saisivat valoa jo muutaman päivän päästä! Niin he maksoivat Matille.
Matti teki talon seinään reiän. Auringonvalo tuli heti sisään.
Ihmiset olivat hyvin tyytyväisiä. Reikä seinässä oli hyvä idea! He halusivat vielä enemmän valoa, joten he päättivät ottaa koko seinän pois.
Nyt taloon tuli paljon valoa. Mutta samalla koko talo kaatui.

The people of Hölmölä build themselves a house but forget to include windows. Only when the work is finished do they realise how dark it is inside. After thinking about the problem, they decide to bring sunlight into the house in a sack. They hold the sack open outdoors, close it and carry it inside. Naturally, opening it does not make the room any brighter.
A man named Matti arrives and offers to provide light for a hundred marks. The villagers accept and pay him. He cuts an opening in the wall, and sunlight enters immediately.
Delighted by this simple solution, they decide to improve it themselves. If a small hole lets in some light, removing the whole wall must be even better. They take the wall down. The house becomes bright, but then it collapses. Their attempt to extend a useful idea destroys the very thing they were trying to improve.
