Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A grocer has a green parrot that guards his shop, talks to customers and sings well. One day, while the grocer is at home, a cat jumps into the shop after a mouse. The frightened parrot moves across the shop and spills bottles of rose oil.

When the grocer returns and sees the oil, he hits the bird on the head. The parrot loses its head feathers and stops speaking. The grocer deeply regrets the blow. He wishes his hand had been broken before he struck the bird and tries to make it speak again.

After three days and nights, a bald man passes the shop. The parrot suddenly asks whether he too has spilled oil. People laugh: the bird assumes that the man lost his hair after the same experience that made it lose its feathers. Its own experience has led it to a mistaken comparison.
