English summary · includes the ending
A poor man is sitting quietly when a king passes him. The man does not look up or show the respect the king expects. The king becomes offended and insults the man and people like him. His minister asks the man why he has failed to behave respectfully.
The man replies that a ruler should expect service from people who hope to receive gifts from him. He also says that kings exist to protect their people. A shepherd serves the sheep, rather than the sheep serving their shepherd. Wealth and position cannot last forever: death removes the differences between rich and poor.
The king accepts the argument and invites the man to make a request. The man asks to be left alone in future. When the king also requests advice, he tells him to value his present opportunity. Power and wealth pass from one person to another and will not remain his forever.
