El burro flautista

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A donkey happens to pass near some meadows and finds a flute. A young shepherd has accidentally left the instrument there. The donkey approaches it to smell it. As he does so, he gives a snort, and the air enters the flute. By chance, the instrument makes a sound.

The donkey is delighted. He declares that he knows how to play very well and objects to the idea that a donkey's music is bad. He takes the unexpected sound as proof of his musical skill.

The narrator points out the mistake behind this proud claim. Some people, like the donkey, may get something right once without knowing the rules of the activity. A lucky result does not show that they have learned the skill. The poem also playfully says that the narrator himself thought of this little fable by chance, repeating the same idea throughout the story.
