La ardilla y el caballo

Short story

¡No estoy quieta nunca!

English summary · includes the ending

A squirrel watches a young horse training with a rider. The horse moves quickly and steadily, following the rider's instructions. The squirrel is not impressed. She says that she can do just as much, perhaps even more. She runs about, goes up and down, and never stays still.

The horse stops and answers her seriously. Instead of arguing about who moves most, he asks whether all her activity serves any useful purpose. He explains that his own efforts have a clear aim: he knows his work and tries to use his ability in his owner's service.

The author then compares some writers to the squirrel. They may spend a great deal of energy on work that has little value. The point is not simply how busy someone appears. It is whether that activity achieves something useful. The fable ends with this criticism of effort spent on unimportant writing.
