The Three Little Pigs

Short story

There was once a mother pig with three little pigs. As she could no longer afford to keep them, she sent them out to find their own way in the world.

The first pig met a man carrying straw. He asked for some and used it to build a house. Soon a wolf knocked at the door and asked to come inside.

“No!” the little pig replied.

“Then I’ll blow your house down!” said the wolf. He blew hard, the house fell down, and he ate the pig.

The second pig built a house from branches of bushes which another man gave him. When the wolf arrived, this pig also refused to open his door. The wolf blew this house down too and ate the second pig.

A third man gave the last pig some bricks. The pig built his house with them, and when the wolf came, he would not let him in. The wolf blew as hard as he could, but the brick house remained standing.

So the wolf tried something else. He said he knew a field full of turnips, vegetables they could collect for dinner. They agreed to go together at six the following morning. However, the pig went at five and collected his vegetables before the wolf arrived.

The wolf was angry but suggested another trip. This time they would pick apples at five in the morning. The pig got up at four and went ahead. The tree was further away, though, and climbing it took time. He was still there when the wolf appeared.

“Are the apples good?” asked the wolf.

“Very good. I’ll throw you one!”

The pig threw an apple so far that, while the wolf went to fetch it, he could climb down and run home.

Next the wolf invited him to a fair at three in the afternoon. As usual, the pig went early. He bought a large round container used for making butter. On the way back, he saw the wolf coming and climbed inside it to hide. The container turned over and rolled downhill with him in it. The frightened wolf ran home without visiting the fair.

Later, the wolf came to the pig’s house and described the strange round thing. The pig explained that he had been inside it.

Now the wolf was furious. He announced that he would come down the chimney and eat the pig. The pig prepared a pot of water over a strong fire. As the wolf came down, he removed the lid. The wolf fell into the water, and the pig put the lid back at once. He boiled the wolf, ate him for supper and lived happily ever after.
