The Table and the Chair
The Table confided his discomfort to the Chair. Between the heat and the painful swellings on his feet, he was suffering considerably. Why not take a little walk? They could have a pleasant conversation while enjoying the air.
The Chair dismissed the suggestion as foolish: surely the Table knew that neither of them was capable of walking.
With a sigh, the Table pointed out that trying could do no harm. Besides, they possessed the same number of legs. What prevented them from walking on two?
They accordingly made their way slowly into town, where they wandered about with an unsteady movement and a cheerful bumping sound. Their appearance attracted immediate attention. People hurried to their side, exclaiming that the Table and the Chair had actually come out to take the air.
Having turned down a narrow lane towards a castle in a valley, however, they became thoroughly lost. They wandered all day before securing a safe return: a duck, a beetle and a mouse accepted payment to guide them back to their house.
Once home, the Table and the Chair whispered affectionately to one another. What a delightful walk it had been! They proposed a dinner of beans and bacon.
The duck, the little brown mouse and the beetle duly dined. They then danced upon their heads before making their way to bed.
