The Table and the Chair

Short story

“You can hardly imagine how much I'm suffering,” the Table told the Chair. The heat was bothering him, and his feet were sore. He proposed a little walk: they could get some fresh air and enjoy a conversation at the same time.

The Chair objected that they were unable to walk. As far as he was concerned, the Table was talking nonsense, and ought to know better.

The Table answered with a sigh. “It can't do any harm to try. I've just as many legs as you. Why can't we walk on two?”

They walked slowly around town, their unsteady steps making a cheerful bumping noise. People hurried towards them, exclaiming that the Table and the Chair had come out for fresh air.

Their outing became more complicated when they followed a narrow lane towards a castle in a valley. They lost their way completely and spent the day wandering about. To get safely home, they eventually paid three guides: a duck, a beetle and a mouse. These brought them back to their house.

At home, they whispered affectionately to each other about the lovely walk they had enjoyed and proposed dining on beans and bacon.

The duck, the little brown mouse and the beetle had dinner, then danced upon their heads. Only after this did they make their way to bed.
