Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A lion and a wild donkey hunt animals together. Each contributes a different ability: the lion uses its strength, while the donkey uses the speed of its legs. Their combined work allows them to catch several animals.

The lion divides what they have caught into three portions. It then explains how these portions will be assigned. The first belongs to the lion because it holds the highest position and is king. The second also belongs to the lion, this time because it is an equal partner in the hunt.

For the third portion, the explanation changes into a warning. The lion tells the wild donkey that this portion will cause it great harm unless it is willing to leave.

The fable closes with advice to judge one's position according to one's strength and to avoid partnerships with those who are more powerful. A shared contribution to the work has not given the weaker partner an equal voice in the division.
