Ο γάιδαρος, ο σκύλος και το γράμμα
Ένας γάιδαρος ταξίδευε μαζί με έναν σκύλο. Καθώς προχωρούσαν, βρήκαν στο έδαφος ένα κλειστό γράμμα. Ο γάιδαρος το πήρε, το άνοιξε και άρχισε να το διαβάζει δυνατά, ώστε να ακούει και ο σύντροφός του.
Το γράμμα αναφερόταν στις τροφές των ζώων. Μιλούσε για χορτάρι και για άλλες τροφές από φυτά.
Ο σκύλος δεν έβρισκε ευχάριστο αυτό το θέμα. Ζήτησε από τον γάιδαρο να διαβάσει πιο κάτω: ίσως εκεί να υπήρχε κάτι για κρέας ή για κόκαλα.
Ο γάιδαρος διάβασε μέχρι το τέλος. Πουθενά δεν βρήκε αυτά που ζητούσε ο σκύλος.
«Πέτα το κάτω, φίλε μου», είπε τότε ο σκύλος. «Δεν είναι καθόλου χρήσιμο».
Το γράμμα δεν μιλούσε για τη δική του τροφή. Γι' αυτό ο σκύλος το θεώρησε άχρηστο.

A donkey and a dog are travelling together when they find a sealed letter lying on the ground. The donkey picks it up, breaks the seal and unfolds it. He begins reading aloud so that the dog can hear what it says.
The letter is about animal food: grass, barley and straw. The dog does not enjoy listening to these subjects. He asks his companion to go further down the letter and see whether there is anything about meat or bones.
The donkey goes through the whole letter, but none of the things the dog has requested appears in it. When the reading is finished, the dog tells him to throw it on the ground, calling it completely useless.
The story ends with the dog's judgment, rather than saying that the donkey follows his advice. What matters to the dog is whether the letter mentions the food he himself wants to hear about.
