English summary · includes the ending
A donkey puts on a lion's skin and goes about frightening other animals. His appearance makes him seem to be something quite different from what he really is. Then he notices a fox and tries to frighten her as well.
However, the fox has already heard him braying. She knows that the animal beneath the lion's skin is a donkey. She tells him that she would have been frightened too, if she had not heard his voice.
The fox's answer reveals the weakness of the disguise. What the donkey looks like can create a false impression, but his own voice gives him away.
The fable ends by comparing him to people who lack knowledge but try to appear important. Their impressive appearance may suggest that they are capable or wise. Yet when they talk too much, their own words reveal what they do not know. Appearance cannot hide the truth forever.
