Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A man and a satyr, a creature from ancient myth, become friends. Winter arrives and the weather is cold. The man brings his hands close to his mouth and blows on them. The satyr asks why he is doing this. The man explains that he is warming his hands because of the cold.

Later, a meal is served to the two friends. The food is very hot. The man takes small amounts towards his mouth and blows on them before eating. Again, the satyr asks what he is doing. This time, the man explains that he is cooling the food because it is too hot.

The satyr now ends their friendship. He says he cannot remain a friend of someone who sends both heat and cold out of the same mouth.

The final advice is to avoid friendship with people whose attitude is uncertain. The story makes that warning memorable through the satyr's unusual reading of two everyday actions.
