Der Blinde und der Lahme

Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A man who cannot walk meets a blind man on the street. The blind man is pleased, because he hopes that the other man will guide him. However, the stranger explains that he cannot walk himself.

Then he notices the blind man's strong shoulders and suggests a way for them to help each other. If the blind man carries him, he can give directions. One man's legs will serve them both, while the other man's eyes will guide their journey.

Taking his walking supports with him, the man climbs onto the blind man's broad back. Together they can now achieve something that neither could manage alone.

The fable ends by extending this idea to people in general. Different abilities can become a reason for cooperation. Instead of only complaining about what we lack, we can share what we have and benefit from one another's strengths.
