English summary · includes the ending
A man owns an excellent bow made of ebony. It allows him to shoot a long way and hit his target accurately, so he values it highly. One day, however, he looks at it closely and decides that it is too plain. Its smooth surface is its only decoration.
He thinks of a way to improve its appearance. He will ask the best artist to carve pictures into the wood. He carries out this plan, and the artist decorates the bow with a complete hunting scene. A hunt seems a suitable subject for something used in hunting.
The owner is delighted with the result. Speaking to the bow as though it could hear him, he tells it that it deserves such fine decoration. Then he decides to try it. He draws the bow, and it breaks. The attempt to improve its appearance has ended with the loss of the valued object.
