Barvy

Short story

„Každý se nejdřív podívá na mě!“ řekla červená barva.

„Ano,“ odpověděla zelená. „Jsi veselá a výrazná. Ale s některými barvami nevypadáš dobře.“

„Proto někdy stojím mezi tebou a jinou barvou,“ řekla bílá. „Pak je pohled na vás příjemnější.“

Zlatá a stříbrná řekly, že dělají totéž. Černá také.

Hnědá a šedá mlčely.

English summary · includes the ending

The colours discuss their different strengths. Red proudly says that everyone notices her first. Green admits that she is cheerful and strong but points out that she can clash with another colour. White, gold and silver say that they can soften such contrasts. Black can do this too and adds a serious quality to a design.

Blue compares the calm and hope of green with her own quality of faithfulness. Violet says that a rainbow would not be complete without her, even though she tends to fade.

Brown and grey have said nothing, so the other colours accuse them of not caring. Grey explains that their quiet appearance is useful: they can stand between colours that clash and help other colours show their qualities.

Brown brings the discussion to an end. Every colour belongs somewhere, but no colour belongs everywhere. Her answer shows why the quieter colours also have a useful place among the others.
