English summary · includes the ending
Three brothers want to marry their cousin, who lives far away. Her father promises her hand to whoever brings the most beautiful and useful object. The brothers travel separately. One buys a telescope, another a carpet that can take people anywhere immediately, and the youngest a healing apple.
When they meet again, the telescope shows that the girl is ill. They travel to her on the carpet and make her smell the apple. She recovers, but each brother claims that his object deserves the reward. Without any one of the three, they argue, the rescue would have failed.
The father sets a new test: whoever shoots an arrow highest will marry her. The first arrow rises almost out of sight, and the second passes through the clouds. The youngest shoots into the sun itself, explaining its spots. He wins the bride, while his brothers remain disappointed because they also love her.
