Short story

English summary · includes the ending

During the summer heat, the wind lifts dust high into the air. The dust hides the sun and begins to mock it. It claims to have darkened, surrounded, and defeated the sun, then tells it to stop shining and disappear.

The sun is not surprised. It calmly agrees that the dust is hiding it, but adds that this will last for only twenty minutes. Once the wind stops, the dust will return to the dirty puddles below and become rubbish again.

The fable ends with this reply. It does not describe the dust actually falling or answering the sun. The joke depends on the difference between the dust's great claim and its temporary position.

The dust speaks as if it has lasting power of its own. The sun points to the wind that carries it: when that support ends, its apparent victory will end as well.
