Short story

English summary · includes the ending

A donkey walks through a large market carrying heavy bags. Its load consists of objects used in religious worship: icons, crosses and holy remains. Many worshippers kneel as it passes.

The donkey sees the people on their knees but misunderstands the reason. It thinks that they are showing respect to the animal itself. Proud of the honour it believes it has received, it begins to bray. Then it kicks, jumps about and rolls in the mud.

Its proud display ends with several blows from heavy sticks. These make it understand whom the worshippers have really been honouring. Their respect belongs to the sacred objects it carries, rather than to the donkey.

The short fable turns on this mistake about the meaning of a public welcome. Being the carrier of important things does not make the carrier important in the same way. The donkey confuses its load's significance with its own and learns the difference painfully.
