التاجر والحديد
كان هناك تاجر يريد السفر للعمل. كان عنده حديد كثير، فتركه عند صديق له وقال: «احتفظ بهذا الحديد حتى أعود.» ثم سافر.
بعد مدة رجع التاجر، وذهب إلى صديقه وطلب الحديد.
قال الصديق: «أنا آسف. أكلته الفئران!»
عرف التاجر أن صديقه يكذب، لكنه لم يغضب أمامه. قال: «نعم، سمعت أن أسنان الفئران قوية جدًّا، وأنها تستطيع أكل الحديد.»
فرح الصديق. ظن أن التاجر صدّق كلامه، وأنه لن يطلب الحديد مرة أخرى.
خرج التاجر من عنده، وفي الطريق رأى ابن صديقه. أخذ الولد معه إلى بيته.
في اليوم التالي جاء الأب إلى التاجر، وكان يبحث عن ابنه.
«هل تعرف أين ابني؟» سأله.
قال التاجر: «عندما خرجت من بيتك أمس، رأيت طائرًا كبيرًا يحمل ولدًا ويطير به. ربما كان ابنك.»
وضع الأب يده على رأسه وصاح: «كيف يحمل طائر ولدًا؟ هل رأى أحد مثل هذا؟ هذا غير ممكن!»
أجابه التاجر: «في بلد تأكل فيه الفئران كل ذلك الحديد، تستطيع الطيور أن تحمل الفيلة أيضًا!»
فهم الأب الآن ما يقصده التاجر. هو لم يصدّق حكاية الفئران. لقد ردّ على كذبة بكذبة.
قال الأب: «أنا الذي أخذت حديدك. هذا ثمنه. أعد إليّ ابني.»

Before leaving on a business journey, a merchant puts a large amount of iron in a friend’s care. When he returns and asks for it, the friend says that mice have eaten it. The merchant seems to accept the explanation, even praising the strength of their teeth. His friend is pleased that the lie has worked.
After leaving, the merchant meets the friend’s son and takes him to his own house. The next day, the worried father asks whether he knows where the boy is. The merchant says he saw a hawk carry a child away, perhaps this very boy.
The father protests that no hawk could do such a thing. The merchant replies that where mice can eat so much iron, hawks could even carry away elephants. The friend understands the answer, admits taking the iron, and offers its value in exchange for his son’s return.
